Applications for admissions lottery system opens November 4

Eighth-graders across Sussex County interested in Sussex Technical High School’s award-winning career and technical education programs are invited to its annual open house on Saturday, November 2.

Students and their families can learn about the school’s 17 career-technical pathways, tour the campus, look behind the scenes of labs and technical areas, talk with instructors, and meet current students. They can also learn about athletics, extracurricular activities, educational technology, and the admissions process.

Doors will open and registration begins at 8:15 a.m., with a presentation starting promptly at 9 a.m. Students may then visit classrooms and talk with teachers and current students.

Beginning Monday, November 4, Sussex County eighth-graders can apply using the statewide school choice application at www.schoolchoicede.org. Sussex Tech uses a random, impartial lottery system for its admissions process, as required by state law. The district has contracted with the state Data Service Center, a respected third-party provider, to administer the lottery system.

The application period closes January 8, and acceptance notifications will be issued by Feb. 28. Parents or guardians must notify the district of the acceptance decision by March 20.

“We prepare Sussex Tech graduates with the tools and knowledge to always have a skill or a trade,” said Principal Dr. John Demby. “Our students gain hands-on career and technical skills in one of 17 different areas. Whether their future goes into the workforce, higher education, or the military, a Raven is always prepared.”

Superintendent Stephen Guthrie said Sussex Tech is placing a renewed emphasis on career-technical education with opportunities through work-based learning and professional certifications and licenses.

“Our teachers equip students with the tools to learn and succeed, whether that’s as an ASE-certified auto mechanic, a state-licensed cosmetologist, or a certified nursing assistant,” Guthrie said. “We provide all students with the opportunity to work in their field during their senior year, learning from local businesses while earning a paycheck at the same time.”

Students not accepted initially will be placed on a waiting list and may be admitted throughout the spring and summer as space becomes available. Last year, approximately 280 students were admitted from about 800 applicants, one of the largest application pools in the school’s history.
