Child Abuse Awareness Campaign

Child Abuse Awareness Campaign

MR DUKES- the students running this campaign would like to be video taped prior to the message airing. Is this possible?

Message to pre-video tape:

Child abuse is a very serious problem here in American and worldwide. According to the National Children’s Alliance, over 550,000 children are known by US authorities to be abused. That does not take into consideration those who have not been identified as abused. Most often the abuse begins before 18 months old by a parent. Child abuse hurts minds, bodies and futures.

APRIL is CHILD ABUSE AWARENESS MONTH. Won’t you help Health Professions students raise awareness by wearing BLUE on Thursday, April 17? BLUE was chosen as the color that represents bruises left behind from abuse. A grandmother placed a blue ribbon on her car antenna and tree to make neighbors aware of the abuse to her grandson and honor this young child who died from the abuse from his own parents.

On Wed, April 16 and Th, April 17, the Health Professions sophomores will be in the Commons Area offering two activities that will help raise awareness. First, paper pinwheels can be made for $1 during all lunches. Why the pinwheel? It is the national symbol for child abuse prevention and represents the bright, happy childhood all children deserve. The pinwheel serves as a visual reminder that our community should take action to end child abuse. The money raised will go directly to a local foundation that provides services to children who are neglected, mistreated and abused.

The second free activity is painting your hand and collaboratively creating a collage pledging to end abuse. Making a promise NEVER to hurt a child with your hand- is the first step to decreasing the amount of abuse that occurs to children each day. Educational pamphlets and give-aways will be offered to help spread the word.

By calling the ChildHelp National Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-422-4453 any hour of the day, any day of the week, anyone can report suspected child neglect, mistreatment or abuse.

So… please join the Health Professions students on April 16 and 17 in the Commons Area to raise money, create pinwheels, take a pledge to end child abuse and raise money to help children. Mark your calendars and wear BLUE on April 17 to show your support to end needless neglect and mistreatment to children all over the world who are hurt by others.
