Introduction
Vocational Technical schools have enormous pressure to keep pace with the changing technology and demands of the workplace. Educating students for the highly skilled workforce of tomorrow requires the purchase of expensive, advanced technological equipment as well as more intensive career and academic instruction. To meet the challenge, Delaware’s vocational-technical school districts established an educational foundation to obtain supplemental financial support for reforming, enriching, supplementing, and strengthening programs and services.
The Districts
The three-county vocational-technical school districts, Kent, New Castle, and Sussex, fill an essential role in Delaware. They enjoy strong support from business and industry and, from a public point of view, are an excellent investment. In fulfilling their mission, the districts have provided pathways to success in life for tens of thousands of high school and adult students who have entered the work force soon after graduation or have gone on to college. For almost six decades, the districts have helped serve the economic and vocational-technical training needs of the state.
The Students
Student demand for vocational-technical education has been increasing and will continue to do so throughout the 21st century. On an annual basis the three districts enroll more than 7,000 high school students. Students are prepared for a wide range of careers in business, construction, medical, service, and technical fields. Many pursue further education at postsecondary institutions. In addition, approximately 7,250 adults are enrolled annually, in a full complement of evening and weekend courses and registered apprenticeship programs. Adult students learn new or updated employment skills and earn General Education Development certificates or high school diplomas.
The Foundation
The Vocational Technical Educational Foundation of Delaware is a nonprofit tax-exempt corporation under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Foundation was established to solicit and acquire support from private sources. Tax-deductible contributions to the Foundation may support program and service needs throughout the districts. These include, for example, innovative program development, advanced technological equipment, capital construction and equipment, student post-graduate scholarships, professional development, and vocational and academic youth organizations.
